Things to Remember While Changing Your Life

It is not for the faint of heart

I just completed my 140th workout in a span of 180 days. Who knew that changing your life would suck so damn bad?

Maybe you can relate. I hope so, because in the midst of the “sucking,” it’s also a fascinating journey of self-discovery. Turns out, you don’t know yourself as well as you thought.

I’m still in the very early stages of a massive life upgrade. Here are three things I learned during the past six months that you will be smart to remember while changing your life.

1. Throw Your Feelings in the Trash

Any good personal development book will tell you that you’ll never get far if you only do things when you feel like doing them. In all these days of consistent exercise, I only felt like doing it on Day one.

Since then, I’ve had countless feelings of resistance and more than a few times when I was still in pain from previous days. Once, I had to deal with my car breaking down on the way to the gym (and still made sure to show up) and several other unexpected occurrences.

Each time, I had to disallow those things from becoming excuses for me not to complete my workout.

2. You Need Total Buy-In From Yourself

During the past six weeks, my weekly workouts have included two sessions with professional fitness coaches. I hired these guys because I knew it was time for me to grow to a different level of intensity.

Man! Those two sessions each week are grueling and insanely painful, even though the guys are technically “going slow” with me because of my extreme weight. For the record, that shit doesn’t feel “slow!”

The sessions are so challenging to me that it’s obvious that I have to be completely sold on the process. You will need to have buy-in from yourself, especially with anything that’s particularly challenging. It’s one of the few ways that changing your life for the better has any chance of happening.

3. Put Yourself First

The best way to help other people is to help yourself first. The more you build yourself up into a good resource, the more you will be capable of doing for others. I am able to help people in minor ways, but I am limited because of several factors.

The more I put myself first, the closer I get to maximize what I’m capable of to serve myself and others. If you are a naturally big-hearted person, you will find it difficult to put yourself first. But in so doing, it doesn’t mean that you can’t help others.

It means that you need to serve yourself in the business of self-care and in upgrading your habits and your value in the marketplace. The healthier you are, the more energy you possess, the more positive your thoughts, they will all conspire to help transform you into a powerful force in the world of people you care for the most.


Changing your life is a long-ass journey and it will require levels of resilience that you wouldn’t believe. But when your ultimate vision is strong enough, it will see you through the toughest times when you just wanna scream.
